The site began as a family plot (Barkaloo/Barkuloo) in the early 1700s. In the 20th century, especially after DAR restoration efforts in the 1920s, the site's Revolutionary War associations were emphasized—particularly the belief that Harmans and Jacques Barkaloo fought in the Battle of Brooklyn. By the 1960s, the commemorative plaque formalized the name “Revolutionary War Cemetery.”
