Known as "Connecticut's Valley Forge," Putnam Memorial State Park in Redding, Connecticut, was where Major General Israel Putnam and his troops encamped for their winter quarters from December 1778 to May 1779. This site was chosen to monitor the storehouses in nearby Danbury, Connecticut, and to protect Long Island Sound and the Hudson River Valley from British attack.

Today, visitors can learn more about Putnam’s life, the encampment, and the park’s history at the site’s visitor center and museum. In addition, they can walk the grounds and see the Putnam Statue sculpted by Anna Hyatt Huntington, which depicts Putnam’s escape from British soldiers in February 1779.
