Across Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain, this site was originally called East Point or Rattlesnake Hill until the Declaration of Independence was read to the soldiers stationed here. British General Guy Carleton abandoned attacking the region and spent winter in Canada upon seeing the strong defense of Mount Independence and Fort Ticonderoga in 1776. In 1777, the Americans retreated from the area and it was taken over by British and German troops.
