Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery is located in St. Louis County, Missouri, along the banks of the Mississippi River. It was established after the American Civil War as part of an effort to create a formal network of military cemeteries. Originally known as the Jefferson Barracks Military Post Cemetery when it was founded in 1826, it was designated a United States National Cemetery in 1866. The cemetery includes eight Medal of Honor recipients and four veterans of the American Revolution.  The cemetery contains Civil War burials of 7536 Union soldiers, 1067 U.S. Colored Troops, and 1010 Confederate POWs.
