Originally built in 1842 to be a strategic point to keep the British from invading through Canada, Fort Wayne was used during the Civil War as a training camp for Michigan's volunteer infantry and artillery forces. The fort was later used in World War I as a garrison for segregated African American troops, and as a site for civilians to build vehicles for the military during World War II.
