Built between 1854 and 1856, the Eleutherian College was the first in Indiana to accept students regardless of race or sex. Many of the school's trustees were very involved in the Underground Railroad, including James Nelson who was arrested under the Fugitive Slave Act of 1851 but had his case thrown out because of the judge's antislavery sympathies.
