The Battle of Boyd’s Creek, fought on December 16, 1780, was a significant frontier engagement in the southern backcountry during the Revolutionary War. While many East Tennessee settlers were away supporting the Patriot cause in the Kings Mountain campaign, a force of Cherokee warriors launched attacks on vulnerable settlements along Boyd’s Creek. Upon learning of the threat, General John Sevier quickly gathered a militia force and confronted the Cherokee near present-day Sevierville, Tennessee. In a sharp and decisive battle, Sevier’s men drove back the attackers and secured the frontier communities from further immediate assaults. The victory strengthened Patriot control of the region, protected East Tennessee settlements, and enhanced Sevier’s reputation as one of the most effective frontier leaders of the Revolutionary era.
