Sharon Springs

On July 10, 1781, American Colonel Marinus Willett dispatched Captain Lawrence Gross to discover the trail of Lieutenant Doxstader, who had just raided the nearby town of Currytown, New York. The American forces planned an ambush, and once Doxstader had been lured out into the open, they converged on the British at Sharon Springs and forced them to retreat. Willett’s victory in the battle is attributed to his ability to make the British believe that there were more forces present than in reality.

Today, visitors can find a historical marker at the site of the battle near the intersection of Gilberts Corners Road and US-20 in Sharon Springs. Nearby, a memorial to the five men of the Tryon County militia who were killed in the battle is located at the intersection of France Street and Spartan Way.
