Plattsburgh

On September 11, 1814, the British began an invasion of New York via Plattsburgh along Lake Champlain. Despite being outnumbered by the British fleet, Master Commandant Thomas MacDonough managed to outmaneuver the enemy, leading to an American victory and a British retreat.

Visitors can explore the War of 1812 Museum in Plattsburgh, which is primarily dedicated to the Battle of Plattsburgh in 1814. The museum is open seasonally from May to October and includes interactive exhibits and battle maps. The museum also hosts a yearly commemorative weekend in September with parades, community festivals, and reenactments of the battle. Nearby, visitors can explore a monument to Commodore Thomas Macdonough commemorating his victory in the battle.
