Ox Swamp

Near modern-day Manning, South Carolina, Ox Swamp is where British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton lost Patriot Colonel Francis Marion after seven hours of pursuit. Because of Marion’s knowledge of backroads and the impassable swamps, he earned the nickname “The Swamp Fox” and caused havoc for British forces. The swamp still exists today, and there are historical signs in Manning detailing Francis Marion’s actions during the war.
