Fort Wadsworth, a part of the Globe Tavern Battlefield

Globe Tavern Battlefield

Second Battle of the Weldon Railroad

Globe Tavern Battlefield is the site of the Battle of Globe Tavern, fought August 18–21, 1864, as Union forces sought to cut the Weldon Railroad—one of the last remaining Confederate supply lines into Petersburg. Soldiers from General Gouverneur K. Warren’s Fifth Corps reached the tracks just south of here on the morning of August 18 and began tearing them up, drawing sharp Confederate counterattacks over the next several days.

Today, visitors can explore the battlefield’s preserved terrain, including interpretive waysides marking the location of the Davis family home and the nearby Halifax Road, where heavy fighting took place. Trails lead through wooded areas where soldiers clashed at close range, and reconstructed earthworks reflect the position of Union defenses during the engagement.

The site also includes Fort Wadsworth, built by Union troops after the battle to secure their new line. From its elevated position, visitors can view the landscape much as Civil War soldiers saw it in 1864—an area of strategic importance that played a key role in the Union’s tightening grip on Petersburg.
