Road to Freedom: NC Tour Guide

Explore the Black Experience in Civil War-Era North Carolina
Road to Freedom NC App Icon

The Road to Freedom: NC encourages visitors and North Carolinians alike to uncover histories of Black contributions, agency, and sacrifice in the cause of freedom during the broadly defined Civil War-era (1830-1890). It unleashes the power of both perspective and place and introduces historical figures that have been given little voice until now. This application allows you to interact with these stories in various ways. You can explore Road to Freedom sites at large or discover this profound history through tour collections for particular North Carolina regions and themes.

Made possible through a grant from the State of North Carolina, the American Battlefield Trust’s Road to Freedom: NC application will serve as a supplemental resource to the upcoming printed Road to Freedom: NC map and brochure. Collaborative in its creation, the initiative was supported by the efforts of Civil War Trails and the African American Heritage Preservation Foundation.
