West Canada Creek

Jerseyfield

Herkimer County, NY  |  Oct 30, 1781

After routing the British at Johnstown, the New York militia under Col. Marinus Willett, pursued the British and forced them into a fighting retreat. Capt. Walter Butler and his men attempted to make a stand at West Canada Creek. Col. Willett engaged the Rangers and eventually forced Butler’s men to retreat but not before Butler himself was killed.

While there was little military impact from the Battle of West Canada Creek, there was a profound morale impact from the death of Walter Butler. Walter Butler was widely hated for his raids on the Mohawk Valley. The death of Walter Butler was a profound psychological victory for the region.
