12-Pound Exploding Shell

3-D Model

This hollow shell shot, excavated on the Princeton Battlefield State Park, would have been filled with gunpowder and the hole plugged with a slow-burning fuse. The fuse would ignite when fired from a howitzer or mortar, arcing the shot through the air, allowing it to explode above its intended target.
