Sideling Hill

Maddensville, PA  |  Apr 4, 1756

In the Spring of 1756, Chief Shingas, a much-feared warrior, led a Delaware attack on Fort McCord, a poorly built stockade near present-day Edenville, Pennsylvania. The Indians captured or killed twenty-seven settlers and burned the fort. Responding to the raid, Captain Alexander Culbertson led a company of about fifty men composed of both provisional troops and militia in pursuit. Three days later, reinforced with nineteen men from Fort Littleton and an unidentified number from Fort Granville, Culbertson’s command tangled with the Delawares at the forks of Sidling Hill Creek and Little Aughwick Creek near present-day Maddensville, Pennsylvania. After a two-hour battle the Indians surrounded the colonists, killing thirty-two, including Culbertson, and wounding seventeen. The exact location of the battle remains a mystery.
