Gettysburg AR: Mary Thompson’s Dog

Lee's Headquarters

This AR experience creates a dog for the doghouse marked “Austin” at Mary Thompson’s home on Seminary Ridge, where she lived at the outbreak of the Battle of Gettysburg. Thompson kept a small garden and a dog with its own little house on the property. On July 1, 1863, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s staff selected Thompson’s stone house as Lee’s headquarters, placing her home (and her dog) at the center of one of the war's most consequential battles.
