Lee and Longstreet at Lee's Headquarters

Lee and Longstreet at Lee's Headquarters

July 1, 1863

On the evening of July 1, Robert E. Lee arrived on the field and established his headquarters on the Mary Thompson property. On this ground, over the next few days, he conferred with generals Longstreet, Ewell, Stuart and other officers to plan the direction of the battle. On the second and third days of fighting, Seminary Ridge was converted into a Southern defensive position and this property bristled with Confederate artillery.
