For More Information
Meeting place
We will meet on the porch of the Visitor Center at 10:00 AM
Planned Activities
We anticipate fallen branches from elm trees around the Parade Ground that get blown off during April windstorms, and so we will gather up those. Water and work gloves will be supplied.
History or Educational Activities
We will give participants a tour of the Fort and discuss it's involvement in the Civil War as Texas Confederates came up the Rio Grande with the intention of capturing New Mexico and Colorado territories for gold and silver resources. After the Fort was ordered abandoned and burned, with federal troops concentrating at Fort Craig to meet the Texans, Fort Stanton was actually garrisoned for six weeks by Company H, 2nd Texas Mounted Rifles from Col. Baylor's command 170 miles away on the Rio Grande near old Mesilla.
Participants will start the day by assisting as a Color Party to hoist up Old Glory, an authentic reproduction of the 34-star version.
