Volunteers should arrive to Camp Nelson National Monument at 10:00 am on Saturday, April 1, 2023. Park Staff will be present at the front gate to direct participants south down Loop 2 road to a barn where the event will take place. At the barn, all volunteers will register, and be issued supplies and directions.
Planned Activities
National Park Service (NPS) staff and volunteers will paint cannon carriages! The carriages were transferred to Camp Nelson National Monument from Shiloh National Military Park in 2022. Reproduction cannon barrels will be mounted on the carriages and placed around the park in the coming years as we continue to restore the historic landscape at Camp Nelson!
History or Educational Activities
NPS staff will provide an overview of Camp Nelson during the Civil War, especially its role as supply depot, hospital depot, and recruitment center for the US Army.
Should I bring any tools or supplies?
All painting tools will be provided by the NPS. Volunteers should wear old long sleeve shirts and pants.
Is there a rain date?
In the instance of inclement weather, Park Day will continue as planned.
