What was life like for American soldiers and civilians in a military camp during the Revolutionary War? Attendees will get a glimpse into 1776 and the road to American independence. You'll be able to explore the encampment at your own pace anytime throughout the afternoon and participate in special hands-on programming just for kids from 12:15-1:45pm!
Join the American Battlefield Trust, Gettysburg Film Festival, and dedicated living historians for an unforgettable event, designed to help adults share their passion for history with the next generation.
This event is free, but registration is encouraged for planning purposes.
Event Details
- This event is open to all who attend with someone from another generation. It is ideal for ages 6–17, with a parent or guardian required to accompany each child. Registration is helpful so that we can plan engaging activities for everyone.
- Location: Free parking is available at Gettysburg Area High School: 1130 Old Harrisburg Rd, Gettysburg, PA 17325. Look for the historic encampment to the right of the main entrance!
- History Scavenger Hunt: American Battlefield Trust staff will be near an entrance to the encampment between 12noon and 5pm. Stop by to pick up a History Scavenger Hunt sheet to use as you explore the camp! Bring back the completed sheet and receive a free small Continental Army flag.
- Activity Program: Join us from 12:15 to 1:45pm for a family-friendly immersive experience! What was it like to be recruited into the Continental Army? To march dozens of miles per day? How did cavalry make a difference on Revolutionary War battlefields? Don't miss this unique opportunity to experience the Revolutionary War up close.
- What to bring:
- Please wear comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing for outdoor activities. Be prepared to walk around on grass or dirt. Shade will be limited.
- A water bottle and snacks (none will be provided)
- Camera! Lots of photo opportunities.
- Notes:
- Parents or Guardians must accompany all children under 16.
- Expect occasional loud noises and historic weapon demonstrations by skilled living historians.
