Following Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860, there was a great rise in tensions throughout the nation, particularly in the state of Maryland. Because of Maryland's role as a border state, Fort McHenry served an important purpose in a time of war.

Join rangers to explore the role of Fort McHenry in securing Maryland for the Union during the Civil War, and to examine how its role as a prison and center of martial rule in Baltimore helped maintain the delicate balance between ensuring national security and safeguarding civil liberties.
