This initiative of the Webby Awards celebrates purpose and mission-driven work and is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences. The Road to Freedom features historic places ranging from museums to battlefields to schools to cemeteries pertaining to key topics in Black history, such as slavery, emancipation, the United States Colored Troops (USCT units), and Reconstruction — and the proactive role that Black men and women took in forging their own narratives. While the first Road to Freedom release focused on Virginia sites and stories, the project has now expanded into Tennessee and North Carolina.
