Erected in 1909 by the Elizabeth Wadsworth Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the obelisk honors “our historic dead who bore arms in the War of Independence and who were ever the brave defenders of our country who made her foundations so enduring.” It stands in a historic cemetery dating back to 1668. The memorial and Eastern Cemetery are outdoors, publicly accessible, and visible from Congress Street.
