Historical Marker Database
The old center section of the Stage House dates to about 1737. Its roadside marker recalls innkeeper Recompense Stanbery raising a troop of Jersey Blues at a Liberty Pole in front of the inn. Here, the public house became a recruiting ground, and the pole made political allegiance visible in the village. The tavern’s history reports that General Marquis de Lafayette spent time here.
