The Sloop Ranger Memorial honors the Continental Navy sloop Ranger (1777), launched from Badger’s Island in Kittery, Maine, and commanded by John Paul Jones during the American Revolutionary War, carrying dispatches of General Burgoyne’s surrender at Saratoga. She later received the first salute to the U.S. flag from the French fleet at Quiberon Bay on February 14, 1778. Under Jones and later Lieutenant Thomas Simpson, Ranger captured numerous prizes, participated in the North Channel Naval Duel, and was eventually captured by the British in May 1780 near Charleston, South Carolina.
