During the Revolutionary War, Ringwood Ironworks produced arms and equipment for the Continental Army. The complex's iron mines, furnaces, forges, and stamping mills supplied many of the American Revolutionary Army's needs. At the time, Robert Erskine supervised it. Erskine was born in Scotland in 1735 and immigrated to New Jersey in 1771, when he began managing Ringwood Ironworks. General George Washington visited Ringwood several times during the Revolutionary War, most notably for the Pompton Mutiny —also called the Federal Hill Rebellion—a brief but serious revolt by about 300 New Jersey Continental soldiers on January 20, 1781.
