Princeton Battle Monument

Lawrence Swiader

This 50-foot Beaux-Arts limestone relief sculpture monument commemorates the January 3, 1777, Battle of Princeton, depicts Liberty inspiring General Washington as he leads his troops into battle, and the death of Washington's close friend,  General Hugh Mercer. The seals of the United States and the original thirteen states appear on the sides of the Monument, and Andrew Fleming West composed the inscription on the back. The Princeton Battle Monument was completed in 1922 and dedicated the same year by President Warren G. Harding on June 9.
