Colonial taverns were crucial hubs for the Revolution, serving as gathering places where travelers exchanged news from across the colonies and locals engaged in political discussions. In December 1775, local townspeople formed an association and submitted anonymous letters; the paper forcefully argued for complete separation from Great Britain under penalty of treason, and the newspaper The Plain Dealer, considered the first regular newspaper in New Jersey, was published here. On August 7th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was read aloud right outside the tavern.
