Elizabeth Minuteman Monument
Historical Marker DatabaseAt this spot, at daybreak on June 7, 1780, the fighting began as British forces moved toward Springfield. Here fell General Stirling, leading the advancing column. On June 8, after the British retreated from Springfield, General Hand attacked here and drove back the 22nd Regt. to the British main position at the point. Skirmishing on this ground continued until the British retreat to Staten Island on June 23rd.
This statue commemorates the people behind the campaign, including Elias Dayton’s soldiers and the Hunterdon men associated with Abraham Bonnell. Black servicemen such as Hunterdon militiaman Jacob Francis belong within this history of New Jersey’s defense.
