President James Monroe invited the Marquis de Lafayette to visit the United States, his adopted country. Lafayette’s tour of all 24 states in 1824 and 1825 drew large crowds and sparked a renewal of patriotism. During the American Revolution, Lafayette’s intense advocacy of the American cause convinced King Louis XVI of France to send troops and ships, which proved crucial to the American victory at Yorktown.
On August 21, 1824, General Marquis de Lafayette was warmly welcomed in East Haven, Connecticut, during his celebrated Farewell Tour of the United States. A crowd assembled on or near the East Haven Green to greet Lafayette, and a militia company fired a gun salute in his honor. After a public breakfast, Lafayette toured Yale College, named in honor of Elihu Yale, Esq. He afterwards visited Mrs. Faith Trumbull, widow of Jonathan Trumbull, who served as governor of Connecticut during the Revolution.
