President James Monroe invited the Marquis de Lafayette to visit the United States, his adopted country. Lafayette’s tour of all 24 states in 1824 and 1825 drew large crowds and sparked a renewal of patriotism. During the American Revolution, Lafayette’s intense advocacy of the American cause convinced King Louis XVI of France to send troops and ships, which proved crucial to the American victory at Yorktown. 

Lafayette and his son, George Washington Lafayette, arrived in Annapolis aboard the Eagle from Baltimore on December 18, 1824. The steamboat was greeted with cannon salutes and cheering crowds. Over the next few days, he attended a military exhibition, a ball,  and met with officials from the state of Maryland. He attended a party at Ogle Hall, hosted by Mary Nevette Steele. Ogle Hall is a historic building built between 1739 and 1742, which is associated with Maryland's Governors.
