Herkimer Home State Historic Site

General Nicholas Herkimer's (1728-1777) home in Little Falls, New York, is a Georgian-style mansion built around 1764 by the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War hero, overlooking the Mohawk River. The estate served dual purposes: as his residence and as a refuge for family, enslaved laborers, soldiers, and neighbors during the turbulent years of the Mohawk Valley frontier. Herkimer’s notable role in the 1777 Battle of Oriskany, one of the war's bloodiest battles, adds to the site’s historical importance; after being wounded, he was brought back to his home, where he died ten days later.
