Great Lakes National Cemetery was established in 2005, and the first burial took place on October 17 of that year. The cemetery covers 544 acres and, as of 2024, had over 55,000 interments. It is the 122nd largest in the national cemetery system. While the exact location of his burial is unknown, the Sons of the American Revolution have erected a memorial to Joseph van Etten. There are two Medal of Honor recipients buried in this cemetery.
