Named after Alexander Scammel, Adjutant-General of the Continental Army who died in the Battle of Yorktown during the Revolutionary War, this fort was built in 1808 as part of a Federal strategy to protect coastal infrastructure leading up to the War of 1812. During the Civil War, the East and West Bastions were constructed to house protected cannons.

A historic coastal fort sits on a small island across calm water, viewed from a shoreline with a wooden pier and small boats. Dark clouds fill the sky above the stone buildings, while figures gather along the dock in this 19th‑century painting.
