Fort Plain gets its name from the fort built in 1776 on a hill overlooking the Mohawk River and Otsquago Creek. This fort served as a refuge for settlers during intense frontier raids. Notably, women disguised themselves as men and manned the walls while most militia members were away, successfully deterring an attack. By 1780, General Robert Van Rensselaer used the fort as his headquarters, briefly renaming it Fort Rensselaer. Washington himself visited Fort Plain on July 28, 1783, greeting the garrison as the war drew to a close.
