Fort Necessity National Battlefield in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, marks the site of the opening battle of the French & Indian War in 1754. This clash between British, French, and American Indian forces ended French power in North America and set the stage for the American Revolution.

Start your visit at the Fort Necessity National Battlefield Visitor Center for an overview of the battle and the film Road of Necessity. Explore the Great Meadow and reconstructed fort, visit the Mount Washington Tavern (open May–October) to learn about the National Road, and see Gen. Edward Braddock’s Grave and Jumonville Glen for insights into key early conflicts.
