United States
The site of Fort McClary has served as a significant military defensive position since 1689, when William Pepperrell, a wealthy merchant and landowner, acquired a tract of land known as "Battery Pasture" next to his house. The initial structures were likely simple earthworks and a small blockhouse, which became known as Pepperrell's Garrison, or Fort Pepperrell. When the Revolution broke out in 1775, the Pepperrell family remained loyal to Britain. Local citizens confiscated the property, including the fort. The New Hampshire militia manned the fort until 1779, after which they abandoned it. The Civil War saw a fifty-man company called the Kittery Artillery, commanded by Captain Dr. Mark Wentworth. The fort was officially named McClary in 1808 after Major Andrew McClary, a New Hampshire native. The Major was the highest ranking officer killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775.
