Fort Halifax Blockhouse was erected as part of Fort Halifax. The blockhouse is the country's oldest extant wooden blockhouse and the only surviving element of the fort. Built by English settlers in 1754 at the confluence of the Kennebec and Sebasticook Rivers, the fort was intended to protect colonial settlements along the Kennebec. Originally square, the fort consisted of a two-story log sentry box, one-story barracks, a fort house with officers' quarters, storerooms, and the armory, and two log blockhouses. It served as a garrison from 1754 to 1766 and as a supply depot and mustering point for militia during the Revolutionary War.
