The Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C.—officially the Washington Parish Burial Ground—is one of the most historically significant cemeteries in the United States. It functions as both an active burial ground and a national memorial landscape closely tied to the early federal government. The cemetery was established in 1807 and quickly became associated with the U.S. Congress. For decades, nearly every member of Congress who died while in Washington was buried or memorialized there. The federal government purchased hundreds of burial sites, eventually owning 806 plots, administered today by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Christ Church, Washington Parish owns the cemetery.
