Ramsour's Mill

A Glimmer of Hope

The Ramsour's Mill Battlefield, located near present-day Lincolnton, North Carolina, marks the site where Colonel Francis Locke's 400-man militia achieved a significant victory over 1300 Loyalists on June 20, 1780. Visitors can explore the area where the early morning surprise attack took place, forcing the Loyalists to retreat beyond the mill. The battlefield is part of a historic site that offers trails and interpretive signs detailing the events of the battle and its impact on the local community. The site also includes a memorial to the fallen soldiers, providing a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made during this pivotal engagement.

The Ramsour's Mill Battlefield is notable as the first major Patriot victory following the fall of Charleston and the loss of the remaining American Continental Army at Waxhaws. This victory was crucial in stemming the tide of Tory activity in the region for the remainder of the war. The battlefield offers a unique opportunity to understand the strategies and challenges faced by both sides during the conflict.
