Visitors can learn more about the first organized land battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Philippi, at the Blue and Gray Park in Philippi, West Virginia. At the site, visitors can read informational signs detailing the battle and learn more about Confederate Pvt. James E. Hanger, who was wounded during the battle and became the war’s first amputee.
