Gwynn's Island

The end of Virginia’s royal government came to a swift end in July 1776, when Governor Dunmore abandoned Gwynn’s Island, Virginia, after an artillery barrage from American revolutionaries. After Dunmore’s retreat from the state, the revolutionaries filled the power vacuum in Virginia.

Today, only a small section of the original Cricket Hill fortification, where the Virginia militia established an artillery battery at Fort Cricket Hill, remains. They are preserved in front of a yacht-storage facility and included within the Gwynn’s Island Historic District. A historical marker for the battle, noting its location, stands at the intersection of Mill Point Road and Cricket Hill Road.
