Gloucester
On August 8, 1775, British Captain John Lindzee sailed the HMS Falcon into Gloucester Harbor in pursuit of an American vessel. Locals began firing on the British ship, and Lindzee returned fire on the town. The Gloucester militia recaptured the seized vessel, along with Lindzee’s crew, the prize schooner, and a number of supplies.
Today, the site of capture of the HMS Falcon is commemorated by a historical marker along the water at the park at Fort Point in Gloucester. The city itself has a rich Revolutionary War nautical history, and visitors can explore Stage Fort Park, which is home to a Soldiers and Sailors memorial plaque as well as a collection of cannons that fired on the HMS Falcon in 1775.
