Fort Mackinac

On August 4, 1814, American forces attacked the British-held Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Outnumbered by British artillery and Native American warriors, the Americans were forced to retreat. The American loss ensured British control of the island and the Straits of Mackinac for the remainder of the War of 1812.

Adapted as a museum on the grounds of Mackinac Island State Park, visitors can explore the historic Fort Mackinac from May to October, and learn more about the battle and the surrounding area via walking trails, reenactments, and museum exhibits.
