Kyle Thompson

California native Kyle Thompson is a musician, songwriter and former chef who turned his passion for Civil War history into a unique effort to preserve America's battlefields. After being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, at age 37, Thompson set out to create a lasting musical tribute to the soldiers who fought and died during the Civil War.

Drawing inspiration from soldiers' diaries, historical accounts and his own family connections to the conflict, Thompson embarked on a recording journey across several Civil War battlefields. Accompanied by friends and fellow musicians, he recorded original compositions and period music at historic locations, including the McLean House at Appomattox, Old Salem Church at Chancellorsville, Dunker Church at Antietam and the Lutheran Seminary Chapel at Gettysburg. He also recorded music at the Illinois Monument at Vicksburg National Military Park.

The resulting album, From the Fields, combined Thompson's love of music and history with his commitment to battlefield preservation. He donated proceeds from the sale of his music to the Trust, helping protect significant battlefield land at Gettysburg and Appomattox.

Thompson used his music to honor the experiences of Civil War soldiers and raise awareness of the importance of preserving the places where they fought. His efforts demonstrated how one individual's creativity and determination could make a meaningful contribution to battlefield preservation.
