In 2009, the Civil War preservation community mourned the loss of Civil War Trust trustee and friend Jody Powell.  Although Mr. Powell was best known as press secretary for Governor and then President Jimmy Carter, Jody had long been a passionate advocate for historic preservation.

Jody was one of the leaders in the nationwide campaign that eventually prevented the construction of a Disney theme park near the Manassas Battlefield in the mid-1990s.  In addition, Jody lent his media expertise to countless battlefield preservation struggles, including debates over development on the Chancellorsville Battlefield and a casino at Gettysburg.  Fans of the Ken Burns’ series The Civil War will recognize his famous voice as one of narrators.
