Generations Event at Antietam Will Engage Historians of All Ages

The American Battlefield Trust is inviting history lovers to bring their kids, grandkids, neighbors and other young friends to Antietam National Battlefield on September 6, where they can march in the footsteps of Civil War soldiers through the West Woods. The afternoon of hands-on, family-friendly activities, hosted in collaboration with the Antietam Institute, is designed to help adults share their passion for history with today’s youth.

Countless history-loving adults cherish the memory of their first battlefield visit, museum trip, or encounter with a costumed presenter. These moments ignited their passion for American history. Since 2015, American Battlefield Trust's Generations Events have sought to inspire the next wave of history buffs with unforgettable learning experiences. From iconic Civil War battlefields like Gettysburg, Antietam, and Fredericksburg to turning-point Revolutionary War sites like Camden, George Washington's Ferry Farm, and Valley Forge, kids have been charging into history and immersing themselves in inspiring stories and engaging learning moments.

The event welcomes anyone who attends with someone from a different generation, but registration is required. This event is free, but space is limited since afternoon admission to Antietam National Battlefield is included with registration.

Our high-energy activities are especially suited for children ages 6–17 and invite kids to try on uniforms, learn to march, discover soldiers' stories and photographs, and learn about mapping a battlefield. A highlight will be a guided history hike on the battlefield.

Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather, and be prepared to walk approximately 1.5 miles over grass and dirt trails over the course of the afternoon. Please note that and a parent or guardian must accompany each child. Water and snacks will not be provided.

Guests should muster at 2:30 p.m. at the New York State Monument on the high ground just to the left of the Antietam National Battlefield Visitor Center (5831 Dunker Church Rd., Sharpsburg, MD 21782). American Battlefield Trust staff will be on-site to help direct attendees. Parking is available in designated lots or overflow parking at the Visitor Center.
