You Take Command-Battle of Weldon Railroad

Between August 18-21, 1864, U.S. and Confederate force fought near Globe Tavern for control of the Petersburg (or, Weldon) Railroad. This four-day battle saw bouts of intense fighting, torrential rain, and poor decisions by commanders on both sides. In the end, the Federal forces held their toehold on the railroad, tearing up miles of track, extending their lines around Petersburg, and causing a serious blow Confederate logistics.  

Have you ever learned about decisions made during a battle and thought you could do better? Now’s your chance!

Join us the Eastern Front Visitor Center on August 15 and 16 and see how you would have fared as a Civil War commander. Throughout the weekend a park ranger will lead an interactive wargame of the Battle of Globe Tavern in which visitors will play the role of the senior commanders. Come try your hand at leading a corps or just stay for a while to learn about that important battle in August 1864. The program will run from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. both days. No experience necessary!
