From Washerwomen to WACs: Women’s History at Fort Washington

Discover the untold stories of the women who shaped Fort Washington from the early 1800s through World War II. This immersive program highlights the labor, resilience, and service of the fort’s laundresses—first recorded here in 1835—and the women of the Women’s Army Corps who arrived in 1943 to support the Adjutant General’s School. Visitors can explore hands‑on displays including historic laundry equipment and a WWII WAC trunk, engage with costumed interpreters, and join guided Women’s History Tours at 11 am and 2 pm. This program brings to life the women whose essential contributions are too often forgotten, inviting visitors to experience Fort Washington through their eyes.
