Unsung Heroes Day: French & Indian War

Partner Event
June 21, 2025 @ 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM EDT

Fort Stanwix National Monument
Rome, NY 13440

Come to Fort Stanwix National Monument over Memorial Day Weekend and you just might see a British flag flying over the fort. On Saturday, June 21, the park will be focusing on the British history of the fort during the park’s French and Indian War Weekend. A range of activities, including weapons demonstrations, special displays, interactive programs, and informational talks, will give visitors more insight into the war that caused Fort Stanwix to be built. Visitors will also gain a better understanding about how Fort Stanwix and the Mohawk Valley were involved with this global conflict.

“Our French and Indian War in North America was part of a larger international conflict between France and England to determine who would be the world superpower of the 18th century”, said Park Ranger William Sawyer. “By supporting British attacks as a supply depot and staging area, Fort Stanwix helped England become that superpower”. Sawyer added “Ironically, this victory over France would help pave the way for the 13 colonies rebellion against England in 1775.”
